World Heritage Region
Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area (GRAWHA)
The Far North Coast Region contains a number of reserves included within the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area (GRAWHA), originally inscribed as Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves World Heritage Area in 1986 and extended in 1994. It includes Mount Warning National Park, the majority of Nightcap National Park, a portion of Mebbin National Park, Numinbah Nature Reserve, Mallanganee Flora Reserve, and Limpinwood Nature Reserve.
GRAWHA was listed following the satisfaction of the following three of the four possible criteria for natural heritage of outstanding universal significance:
-
outstanding examples of the major stages of the Earth's evolutionary history, including rainforest ecosystems and relict plant and animal species dating from Gondwana
-
outstanding examples of significant ongoing geological process and biological evolution, including centres of endemism where ongoing evolution is taking place and taxa showing evidence of relatively recent evolution.
In addition, the Tweed shield volcano is one of the best preserved in the world, notably for its size, age and landforms that represent all three stages of the erosion of shield volcanoes: the planeze, residual and skeletal stages.
-
significant areas for the conservation of biological diversity, with the border region containing the highest species diversity in Australia for birds, marsupials, frogs and snakes. In addition, the region contains the principal habitats of a large number of threatened plant and animal species.
There is only a small area of Mebbin NP (11ha) that is part of the WHA, however the remainder of the NP is a candidate for inclusion in a proposed extension of the WHA as it has been assessed as exhibiting similar natural heritage values.
